OMAHA, Neb. - Sophomore #Joey Martin# had two goals and an assist to lead the UNO hockey team to a 5-2 win over the Ferris State Bulldogs on Saturday night at Qwest Center Omaha.  The win gave the Mavericks a 2-0 sweep of their first round series in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association Playoffs.  The Mavericks rode the strength of a three-goal second period to advance to the second round for the fifth straight season.  

UNO now advances to the second round next weekend against second-ranked Notre Dame. The Mavericks will travel to South Bend, Ind., Mar. 14-16, to square off in a best-of-three series against the Fighting Irish at the Joyce Center.

#Jerad Kaufmann# turned in another sparkling performance in goal for UNO with 18 saves.

#Matt Ambroz gave the Mavs a 1-0 lead after one period with a powerplay goal assisted by Martin and Nick Von Bokern#.

Martin boosted the lead to 2-0 with his first goal of the game just 1:31 into the second period, knocking in a pass from #Dan Charleston#.  

#JJ Koehler put the Mavs up 3-0 just two minutes later when he banged in a spin-o-rama feed from John Kemp# for his first goal of the season.

Ferris State broke a goal-scoring drought of more than four periods on the weekend when Brendan Connolly batted home his ninth goal of the year, but Martin restored the three-goal lead before intermission when he scored at 15:04 to make it 4-1 after two.

The Mavericks earned their second shorthanded goal in as many nights when #Jeric Agosta made a steal in the neutral zone and set up Eddie DelGrosso# for a one-timer to make it 5-1.

The Bulldogs got a late powerplay goal from Connolly to complete the scoring.

UNO outshot Ferris State 35-20 in the game.
