OMAHA, Neb. – The University of Nebraska at Omaha Mavericks snapped their 14-game winless streak, shutting out the Ferris State University Bulldogs 3-0 in Central Collegiate Hockey Association first-round playoff action Friday night at the Qwest Center Omaha.
Senior goalkeeper
Jerad Kaufmann made 24 saves on the night to pick up his first shutout of the season, while sophomore
Rich Purslow played the role of offensive catalyst, assisting on two of the Maverick's three goals.
With the win UNO (14-15-8) takes a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three series with FSU (12-18-7), and will look to wrap up the series Saturday night as the two teams face-off once again at 7:05 p.m. CST at the Qwest Center Omaha.
The second period was a stark contrast to the scoreless first as UNO got two goals in just over four minutes.
Alex Hudson, assisted by
Rich Purslow, managed to put one by Ferris State's goalie Taylor Nelson to make it a 1-0 game just 5:28 into the period. At 9:55 of the period
J.P. Platisha scored his first goal of the season, a shorthanded marker, on a pass from
JJ Koehler and
Eddie DelGrosso.
The Mavericks picked up right were they left off in the second, grabbing the momentum early with a
Matt Ambroz power-play goal at 1:21 mark of the period. The Maverick defense took over from there. Ferris State pulled their goalie with almost four minutes remaining, but the UNO defense held fast and the Bulldogs failed to get anything past Kaufmann.
