UNO Softball Opens Conference Play This Weekend

The 23rd ranked University of Nebraska at Omaha softball team will face three different opponents this week.  The Mavericks will square off with in-state rival Nebraska-Kearney on Wednesday, April 1.  The doubleheader, which was originally scheduled to be played on Tuesday, will begin at 2 p.m., weather permitting.  This weekend the Mavs will play host to a pair of MIAA foes.  On Friday, April 3 UNO will face Emporia State in a doubleheader at 2 p.m.  On Saturday the Mavs will take on Washburn in another doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.  The home games will be held at Claussen-Westgate field.

The Records
The Mavericks improved their record to 22-5 on the season after sweeping Wayne State (Neb.) in a doubleheader at Clauseen-Westgate field on March 25. UNO won the first game in extra innings 2-1 after #Amanda Bader knocked in Kristi Meneely# from third base to win the game.  The Mavs took the second game by the same score with #Beth Haley# coming in to get a save.  Nebraska-Kearney is 10-14 on the season and 5-3 at home.  Emporia State is 17-8 and Washburn is 13-18.  The Mavericks, Hornets and Lady Blues will all play their first MIAA games this week.

The Coaches
#Jeanne Scarpello# is in her tenth season as the UNO head coach.  She entered the 2009 season just three wins shy of reaching 400 wins for her career. She reached that milestone in just the fourth game of the season when the Mavs defeated Saint Edward's on February 21.  Her record now stands at 411-125-1 including four conference titles, nine straight trips to the NCAA Division II tournament, and a national championship in 2001.  She is assisted by Michala Cimino (12th season), #Cory Petermann# (9th season), and Steven Boulton (1st season).

Season Leaders
#Katelyn Hinton and Jenna Dell# are tied for the team lead in batting average (.299).  Hinton continues to lead in hits (26), runs (16), RBIs (21) and home-runs (5).  Beth Haley leads the team in strike-outs with 66.  #Melissa Negrete#, who improved to 8-2 last week, leads the team in wins and era with a 1.09 earned run average.

The Series

UNO has a commanding lead in the all-time series against Nebraska-Kearney.  The Mavs lead that series by 19 games, 48-29.  In the series against Emporia State however, UNO trails by four games with the overall record sitting at 17-13.  The Mavericks have also dominated Saturdays foe, Washburn, with an overall record of 21-8 against the Lady Blues.

Coming Up
UNO will travel to Maryville, Mo., for a doubleheader with Northwest Missouri State at 2 p.m on Tuesday, April 7.  The following day, April 8, the Mavs return home for a doubleheader at Claussen-Westgate field against Upper Iowa.  Those games are is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.  On Saturday, April 11, UNO will play host to Fort Hays State.  The first pitch is set to be thrown out at 12 p.m.
