ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The University of Nebraska at Omaha hockey team fought its way back from a three-goal deficit, but four third-period goals by the fourth-ranked Michigan Wolverines were too much for the Mavericks as they dropped the first game of their two-game Central Collegiate Hockey Association series, 8-3 on Friday night.
Four different Mavericks registered multi-point nights as the Mavericks' three goals marked the first time in more than a month that they have scored more then twice in a game. But at the same time, the eight goals the Mavs surrendered was the most given up since last season when the Wolverines hung ten on them in the second-round of the CCHA Playoffs.
Michigan dominated a majority of the play in the first frame, holding the Mavericks to zero shots on goal through the first twelve minutes of play. The Wolverines had little trouble finding the nets themselves, opening up a two-goal lead on back-to-back goals less then a minute apart. Robbie Czarnik redirected a Chris Summers' slap shot for a power-play marker at 2:12. Carl Hagelin's goal at 3:11 of the period was of the even-strength variety.
The Mavericks and Wolverines traded goals in the second. UM pushed its lead to three on a shorthanded marker at 3:43, but senior #
Tomas Klempa#'s power-play score at 10:16 cut the lead back to two. The Wolverines' David Wohlberg put his team back on top by three at 13:41. That lead lasted just twenty-eight seconds as UNO sophomore #
Rich Purslow# netted his tenth goal of the season at 14:09 to send the Mavericks into the second intermission down two.
UNO clawed its way to within one of the Wolverines at 2:24 of the third period on a #
Joey Martin# even-strength marker. But that was as close as the Mavs got as the Wolverines scored four unanswered goals in the last fourteen minutes of play to claim a 8-3 victory.
With the loss UNO runs its winless streak to ten games, and falls to 13-12-7 overall and 8-10-7-3 in CCHA play. The Mavericks and the Wolverines will wrap up their two-game series Saturday night, Feb. 14, at the Yost Ice Arena in Ann Arbor, Mich. Face-off is slated for 7:05 p.m. CST and will be televised on Fox Sports Net Detroit and CBS College Sports.
