This Week: The 12th-ranked UNO hockey team plays its first road games against a CCHA clustermate this week when it visits the
Northern Michigan University Wildcats for games on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 20 and 21. Face-off is 6:35 p.m. CT each night from the Berry Events Center in Marquette, Mich.
Last Week: The Mavericks split two home games with Lake Superior State last week. The Mavs earned their first shutout of the season on Friday, blanking the Lakers 4-0.
Rich Purslow had a pair of goals, and
Jeremie Dupont stopped 22 shots. The next night, the Lakers had an early 2-0 lead and held on for a 3-1 win. Freshman
Terry Broadhurst had UNO's only goal.
The Records: The Mavericks are 5-2-3 this season and 2-2-2-1 in the CCHA. They are tied with Notre Dame for sixth place in the league. The Wildcats are 3-5-2 overall and 2-3-1-0 in league play. That puts them in a tie for eighth place with Lake Superior State.
The Series: UNO is 13-13-2 all-time against Northern Michigan and 4-9-2 all-time at Marquette. Last season, the two teams split a pair of one-goal games in Omaha on Jan. 9 and 10. The Mavericks won 4-3 on the first night and the Wildcats rebounded for a 3-2 victory the next night. The two teams will meet again in Omaha on Jan. 22 and 23.
The Coaches: The 2009-2010 season marks a new era for Nebraska-Omaha as #
Dean Blais# takes over as the head coach.
Mike Kemp, the only coach in the program's history, was promoted to Associate Athletic Director in May of 2009. Blais brings an impressive resume to Omaha. He led the University of North Dakota to national titles in 1997 and 2000. He won five WCHA regular season titles with UND and two playoff championships. He is a two-time winner of the Spencer Penrose Memorial Award given to Division I hockey's top coach. The native of International Falls, Minn. has a career record of 267-117-36. Blais is assisted by former Omaha Lancer head coach and first-year associate head coach Mike Hastings and third-year assistant coach Nick Fohr.
Walt Kyle is in his seventh season at the helm of Northern Michigan. The 1981 graduate of NMU is 144-126-38 all-time as a college coach.
