BIG RAPIDS, Mich. – The University of Nebraska at Omaha hockey team rebounded from last night's lopsided defeat by skating to a 1-1 tie with the Ferris State University Bulldogs in Central Collegiate Hockey Association action Saturday night at the Robert L. Ewigleben Ice Arena.

FSU beat the Mavericks 2-1 in a three-round shootout to claim an extra conference point and move within four points of the Mavs in the CCHA standings.

The Mavericks came out with a sense of urgency in the opening frame, spending a majority of the period pressuring the Bulldogs in their own zone and outshooting them 16-4. The UNO onslaught yielded positive results.  For the second night in a row, the Mavs got on the scoreboard first, taking a 1-0 lead at 17:56 of the first period on a #Rich Purslow# power-play goal.

FSU's special teams would square the game at 1-1 in the second, making the most of a UNO five-minute major penalty by scoring the equalizer on the power play at 12:27.

Neither team had an answer for the opposing goalie in the third period, nor after five-minutes of overtime, so the game headed into a shootout.

The Mavs misfired on their first two attempts in the deciding shootout, but were kept in it when freshman #John Kemp wrapped one around FSU goalie Taylor Nelson. The Bulldogs responded with their very next shooter as Zach Redmond beat Jerad Kaufmann# to claim a 2-1 shootout victory and pick up an extra conference point.

The Mavericks pick up an important conference point with the tie, moving to 13-10-6 on the season and 8-8-6-3 in CCHA play. UNO will return home next weekend, Feb. 6-7, to square off with another CCHA clustermate, Western Michigan, at Qwest Center Omaha. Face-off for next weekend's games is set for 7:05 p.m. CST.
