COLUMBUS, Ohio – The 14th-ranked University of Nebraska at Omaha hockey team battled back from an early two-goal deficit against the Ohio State University Buckeyes Friday night only to see the game slip through its fingers in the closing seconds. A C.J. Severyn goal with just 1.1 seconds showing on the clock lifted the Buckeyes to a 4-3 Central Collegiate Hockey Association win over the Mavericks at the Value City Arena.
Forwards #
Rich Purslow and Tomas Klempa# powered the UNO attack on the night. Purslow scored a pair of goals, while Klempa picked up two assists to run his current point streak to ten games. Goalie #
Jeremie Dupont# stopped 34 shots in the losing effort.
With the loss the Mavericks fall to 9-3-1 on the year and 5-3-1-1 in CCHA play, while the Buckeyes improved to 7-6-1, 5-5-1-1. The two teams will wrap up their two-game series Saturday evening with a 7:05 p.m. CST face-off scheduled at the Value City Arena in Columbus, Ohio.
UNO found itself in an all too familiar place early in Friday's contest. OSU put the Mavericks down 2-0 in the opening period on an even-strength goal by Hunter Bishop at 11:56 and a Sergio Somma power-play marker at 18:03. It was the tenth time in thirteen games this season that the Mavericks have allowed an opponent to score first.
The Mavs, however, battled back in the second, cutting the Buckeye lead to 2-1 on a #
Dan Charleston# power-play goal at 1:54. They evened things up at two-all when Purslow beat OSU goaltender Dustin Carlson at 12:11.
Purslow's second goal at 13:41 of the third period gave the Mavericks their first lead of the game, 3-2, but it was short lived.
OSU came charging back and knotted things up 3-3 two minutes later at 15:46 on an Ian Boots score. A frantic scramble in front of the UNO net gave the Buckeyes the opportunity they needed late as Severyn snuck a goal over Dupont's shoulder and into the back of the net with less then two seconds left in the game.
The four goals Ohio State scored Friday are the most scored by any UNO opponent this year. All three of UNO's losses on the year have been by one goal.
