OMAHA, Neb. – The University of Nebraska at Omaha hockey team claimed their second Mutual of Omaha Stampede title in as many years Saturday night with a 2-1 overtime victory over the Dutchmen of Union College at the Qwest Center Omaha.
Senior Dan Charleston earned tournament MVP honors on the weekend, picking up a pair of assists in Friday's contest against American International and scoring a goal in each of the Mavericks' games, including the game-winner 4:15 into overtime Saturday night.
With the win, UNO improves to 2-0 on the season, while Union drops to 1-1. The Mavericks return to action next weekend when they play host to Mercyhurst. Both games are slated for a 7:05 p.m. face off at Qwest Center Omaha.
Union opened the scoring in the first period when John Simpson broke free for a shorthanded goal, beating UNO goalkeeper Jerad Kaufmann at the 6:38 mark.
A defensive battle for most of the game, the Mavericks wouldn't get on the scoreboard until the third period. Sophomore defenseman Alain Goulet evened things up when he ripped a slap-shot from the blue line through traffic and past Dutchmen goalie Corey Milan midway through the third.
Offensively, UNO out-shot the Dutchmen 32-16, including a 17-3 in the third period.
Kaufmann was solid in net for the Mavericks, stopping 15 of 16 shots in route to collecting his first win of the season.
