Mavericks Set To Host Exhibition

The Mavericks will get their first taste of competition Monday, Oct. 13, with a 7:05 p.m. exhibition game against the University of Manitoba at Qwest Center Omaha. The contest, the 13th between the two schools, will kick off a busy first week for the Mavericks as they open regular-season play later in the week during the ninth annual Mutual of Omaha Stampede.

Media Coverage
The games will be broadcast on KKAR, 1290 AM, with the pre-game show beginning 30 minutes before face-off. Greg Harrington will call the action, with Terry Leahy providing color commentary.

The Records
UNO finished the 2007-08 season at 17-19-4 overall and in eighth place in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association. Monday will be UNO's first competitive contest since the CCHA playoffs last March. Manitoba on the other hand, comes into Monday night's exhibition having already played a dozen games this season, amassing a record of 3-7-0 heading into an Oct. 10-11 series with Saskatchewan.

The Coaches

Nebraska-Omaha's Mike Kemp is in his 12th season as the Maverick head coach. Kemp, a 1975 graduate of Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minn. and Duluth, Minn. native, is 179-206-49 at UNO overall. While his counterpart, Don MacGillivray, is entering just his second season at the helm of the Bisons, collecting an overall record of 37-56-2.

The Series
This will be the 13th game between UNO and Manitoba, having played at least one game against each other during each of the last 12 season. UNO first ever hockey game was a 3-2 loss to Manitoba on Oct. 17, 1997 at the Civic Auditorium in Omaha, Neb. The Mavericks hold a 10-2 advantage over the Bisons in the series and have won the past four meetings by by the combined score of 30-1.

Last Meeting
Mick Lawrence led the scoring barage for the Mavs a season ago, netting a pair of goals and contributing an assist as the Mavs routed the Bisons 8-1 in front 5,889 fans at the Qwest Center Omaha. had a pair of goals and an assist to lead the scoring parade. UNO converted three power-play chances on the night and outshot the Bisons 42-19.

Coming Up
The Mavericks will open the regular season Oct. 17-18 when they host American International, Quinnipiac and Union in the annual Mutual of Omaha Stampede at the Qwest Center Omaha.UNO claimed the Stampede title a year ago by defeating Alabama-Huntsville 5-1 in the finals.
