WORCESTER, Mass.--Boston University scored six unanswered goals enroute to a 9-2 victory over Nebraska-Omaha in the semifinals of the NCAA Northeast Regional on Friday evening.
Nebraska-Omaha ended its season at 20-15-6 while Boston University (26-9-4) advances to the Northeast Regional Final on Saturday night against the winner of the Boston College/Miami semifinal.
Nebraska-Omaha jumped out to a 1-0 lead after
Bill Thomas scored his 27th goal of the year on the power play at the 3:32 mark of the opening period.
Kaleb Betts unleashed a slapshot from the right point and Thomas knocked in the rebound from the crease. Boston University tied the score late in the period when Bryan Ewing scored on the power play with 1:36 remaining.
The Terriers then took control of the game in the second stanza, scoring six goals in a span of 12 minutes. BU's Chris Higgins set an NCAA Regional record by scoring the fastest hat trick in 5:31. Higgins struck at 4:53 of the period, followed by a tally by Dan Spang 2:59 later for a 3-1 lead. The Mavs'
Tomas Klempa scored just 14 seconds later from a wristshot from between the circles but Higgins and teammate Kenny Roche scored within 21 seconds of each other for a 5-2 lead. Higgins struck once more at the 10:24 mark of the period while Ewing added his second tally of the evening with 2:53 remaining in the period.
BU's Tom Morrow and Brian McGuirk added goals of the third period.
The Mavericks were outshot 38-22 in the contest. BU was 4-for-7 on the power play while UNO was 1-for-2.
