OMAHA, Neb. (April 30, 2026) — Omaha baseball head coach Evan Porter, one of the most decorated players in program history, has announced his resignation effective following the 2026 season, his 10th as the Mavericks' skipper.
"The 2026 season will be my final season coaching Omaha Baseball," said Porter. "While this is a difficult decision, I'm confident it's time for me to step away and put my family first. My oldest son just started Little League, and I plan to be at every game. Over the past 20 years, I've given my all to the Mavs and made memories and relationships I'll cherish forever. To the coaches and players I've worked with during that time, thank you. I look forward to finishing this season strong and remaining a lifelong supporter of UNO. Once a Maverick, always a Maverick."
A 2009 alumnus of the University of Nebraska at Omaha, Porter, a former professional player and Major League Baseball draft pick, spent four seasons as an assistant coach before taking over his alma mater in 2016.
"Coach Porter represents the very best of UNO," said Adrian Dowell, vice chancellor / director of athletics. "A Hall of Famer and one of the most accomplished student-athletes in our history, Evan has been an exceptional ambassador for Maverick Baseball throughout his nearly 20 years with the University of Nebraska at Omaha. This is certainly a bittersweet moment for our department as we are losing a true cornerstone of our culture, while also celebrating his decision to spend more time with his family."
Dowell continued, "We are grateful for the leadership, integrity and pride he has poured into this program, and for the foundation he leaves behind."
In just his third season as head coach (2019), the 2018 UNO Athletic Hall of Fame inductee led Omaha to the Summit League regular-season and tournament titles, resulting in the program's first NCAA Division I tournament appearance. That year, Omaha finished the campaign with a .984 fielding percentage, the best in the nation.
Since joining the coaching staff in 2013, three of his former players have been drafted and four have played in Minor League Baseball, the most recent being Mike Boeve (2023).
The 2019 and 2024 Summit League Coach of the Year, Porter has coached six Academic All-America selections, four Summit League Players of the Year, three Summit League Pitchers of the Year, one Summit League Defensive Player of the Year, two Summit League Newcomers of the Year and a total of 35 All-Summit League honorees.
A two-time All-American for Omaha, Porter was also a three-time All-Region selection from 2007-09, in addition to earning two All-NCC honors (2007-08). He was named first-team All-MIAA in 2009.
A member of the Maverick squad that earned a berth to the 2007 NCAA Division II National Finals, Porter was part of two Maverick teams (2006 and 2008) that set a school record with 45 wins. During his time on the roster, the Mavericks made four straight NCAA regional appearances and won the 2008 NCC championship.
Porter holds an overall record of 189-270-2 (.412) as head coach of the Mavericks.
"As we move forward, our aspirations are clear—we are committed to building on that foundation to consistently compete for conference titles and NCAA tournaments," said Dowell. "This program is well positioned for the future, with one of the premier ballparks in the country and significant facility additions on the horizon, including the recently announced clubhouse and training facility projects."
"We will continue to holistically invest the resources necessary to support our long-term goals for this program. For several reasons, this is a great job, and we will immediately begin a national search to identify the next leader of Omaha Baseball."
A national search will commence to find the seventh head coach in program history.
The Summit League second-place Mavericks continue the season in Greeley, Colorado beginning Friday, May 1 against Northern Colorado.
