OMAHA, Neb. — Omaha leaned on both unlikely and familiar power sources to defeat South Dakota State, 10-7, in Summit League baseball Thursday at Tal Anderson Field.
With a steady breeze blowing out, the teams combined for six home runs. The Jackrabbits (21-28, 12-13 Summit) hit two in a four-run third inning off eventual winning pitcher
Maddox Meyer to take a 5-2 lead.
Senior
Sam Beck answered with a solo homer to center in the fourth, the first of his Mavericks career, and
Henry Zipay later drew a bases-loaded walk to trim the deficit to one.
Omaha (19-24, 14-11 Summit) took the lead for good in the fifth with just two hits — an RBI single from
Edoardo Cornelli and a three-run homer to deep left by
Chase Diggins. Playing through injury in a leg brace, Diggins hit his first home run as a Maverick in front of his parents, who traveled from Australia for the final regular-season series.
The Mavericks added insurance in the eighth when
Jackson Trout, the Summit League's leading hitter, launched a two-run homer down the left-field line. His team-leading ninth home run left the bat at 110 mph.
Brayden Curtis,
Tanner Hosick and
Nate Moquin combined to limit South Dakota State to two hits and one run over the final four innings. Moquin pitched a perfect ninth to record his league-leading eighth save, while Meyer improved to 5-4.
Mason Gaines and
Jackson Vaughn also drove in runs for Omaha, while Nolan Grawe, Dayton Franke and Luke Luskey homered for the Jackrabbits.
The teams close out the regular season with 6 p.m. CT games Friday and Saturday at Tal Anderson Field.
