OMAHA, Neb. — On a night honoring retiring head coach
Evan Porter, Omaha delivered an 11-3 win over South Dakota State in Summit League baseball Friday at Tal Anderson Field.
With the victory, Omaha (20-24, 15-11 Summit) secured the No. 2 seed in next week's Summit League Championship.
After a delay of more than an hour due to lightning, the Mavericks totaled 17 hits, their most since an 18-hit performance against Northern Colorado on March 26.
Henry Zipay led the offense, going 4 for 5 with two doubles and two RBIs for his third four-hit game of the season.
Chase Diggins, playing through a leg injury, went 3 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs scored, while
Jackson Trout finished 2 for 4 with two RBIs and two stolen bases, raising his league-leading average to .377.
Eli Hoerner added two doubles and a career-high three RBIs, and
Hayden Lewis and
Sam Beck each recorded two hits.
Starting pitcher
Tanner Foertsch was effective on the mound, allowing one run on three hits with five strikeouts and one walk over six innings to improve to 3-4.
Drew Iverson,
Nick Riggs and
Cole Kenyon combined for three innings of relief.
Porter, who is stepping down after 10 seasons, threw out the ceremonial first pitch to a standing ovation. Omaha will honor 14 players on Senior Day Saturday, with first pitch moved to 5 p.m. CT due to weather.
Oral Roberts, Omaha, South Dakota State and Northern Colorado have clinched the four spots in the Summit League Championship, set for May 20-23 at Siebert Field in Minneapolis. As the No. 2 seed, Omaha will be the home team in its opening game of the double-elimination tournament.
