During opening weekend against No. 20 Minnesota State, Omaha upset the Mavericks 6-2 on night one (Oct. 10) of the Spirit of the Maverick Series. On night two, Omaha fell 4-1, splitting the rivalry series and securing the Spirit of the Maverick Trophy for the first time since the series was renewed in 2023 on goal differential.

Reigning National Collegiate Hockey Conference Goaltender of the Year, co-captain and senior Simon Latkoczy (Trencin, Slovakia) made two starts, making 47 saves on opening night and 17 during game two, allowing five goals across two games.

Freshman forward Marcus Nguyen (Calgary, Alberta, Canada) paces the Mavericks with three points through the opening stretch. He's one of seven Mavericks to find the back of the net this season.

Tied atop Omaha's assist leaderboard, freshman forward Jérémy Loranger (Trois-Rivières, Quebec, Canada), senior defenseman and co-captain Griffin Ludtke (Elko, Minn.) and Nguyen have each tallied two assists through two games.

Dating back to 1997, against No. 13 UMass, Omaha have won six of their last eight games. The Minutemen and Mavericks last clashed on Oct. 11, 2024, at Orleans Arena in Las Vegas, Nev., where Omaha secured a 3-2 overtime victory in the Ice Breaker Tournament semifinal.

No. 13 UMass heads to Omaha coming off of their sixth NCAA tournament appearance, and is currently riding momentum of a 5-4 overtime win over Bentley on Oct. 18 at Mullins Center in Amherst, Mass.

Through the Minutemen's first five games of the season, junior forward Jack Musa leads the Minutemen with nine points, owning four goals and five assists while freshman forward Vaclav Nestrasil tops the team in scoring with five goals.

Following homecoming weekend, Omaha Hockey is set to play their first road series to start off conference play at No. 16 Colorado College on Friday, Oct. 31 and Saturday, Nov. 1.
