No. 12 Hockey hosts Augustana in home-opening series

Oct 17, 2024

OMAHA, Neb. – No. 12 Omaha hockey (2-0-0) returns to Baxter Arena for the first time this season for a two-game series against Augustana (1-1-0), with puck drop set for 7:07 p.m. on both Friday, Oct. 18 and Saturday, Oct. 19 on NCHC.tv.

The Mavericks are fresh off two big wins in overtime against then-No. 14 UMass and then-No. 5 Minnesota to take the Ice Breaker Tournament championship in Las Vegas.

As for the Vikings, they travel to Omaha after a two-game series against Long Island last weekend on their home ice. Augustana shutout the Sharks 4-0 in its season-opening game last Friday and dropped the second game 3-2 on Saturday to split the series.

Augustana picked up a 4-1 victory in an exhibition match in Grand Forks, N.D., against then-No. 5 ranked North Dakota.

Sophomore forward Ben Meerman leads the Vikings with three points, and team captain and senior Luke Mobley is tied in team lead with two goals alongside sophomore forward Owen Bohn. Sophomore goaltender Josh Kotai recorded the shutout over Long Island last Friday.

The series this weekend will only be the third and fourth contests between the two programs since Augustana started at the Division I level in the 2023-24 season.

Last season, the two teams met in a home-and-home series that began with a 2-1 Omaha win at Baxter Arena on Nov. 24, 2023. The Mavericks traveled nearly 185 miles north to complete a sweep, winning 5-2 in Sioux Falls, S.D., on Nov. 25, 2023.

Omaha is 2-0 against Augustana, outscoring the Vikings 7-3.

The Mavericks were recognized on Monday when the NCHC announced its Goaltender and Defenseman of the Week in Simon Latkoczy and Jacob Guevin. The pair of juniors helped push the Mavericks to two wins last weekend thanks to 77 saves from Latkoczy, with 53 in the second game against Minnesota, which tied a program record set by Dan Ellis against Ohio State on March 14, 2001.

Guevin sent everyone home from Las Vegas with the game-winning goal in overtime against the Golden Gophers. Senior forward Zach Urdahl also provided a notable effort against UMass, scoring two goals including the game-winner in overtime last Friday night.

The junior defenseman leads Omaha with three points (1G-2A), while Urdahl leads the team with two goals.

Following this weekend, the Mavericks will head to Mankato, Minn., for a two-game series with Minnesota State on Friday, Oct. 25 and Saturday, Oct. 26.
