Former Mavericks Assistant Named San Jose Sharks Head Coach

Jul 28, 2022

Omaha, Neb.- The San Jose Sharks announced their new head coach Wednesday, naming former Maverick assistant coach David Quinn the tenth head coach in the Sharks' franchise history.

Quinn served as the first assistant coach in Omaha hockey history (1996-2002), helping head coach Mike Kemp put together the team from scratch. He spent six years at Kemp's side, quickly building a fledgling program into a conference contender.

"David Quinn was the first person I hired to join my staff in 1996," Kemp said. "He was instrumental in the formation and the early success of our hockey program. There is no doubt that without his efforts, the start of our program would not have been so successful."

Most recently, Quinn led Team USA to an undefeated preliminary round at the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing. Quinn also coached the Americans to a fourth-place finish at the 2022 World Championship.

Prior to his international success, Quinn spent three seasons as the head coach of the NHL's New York Rangers (2018-2021), leading the Broadway blue shirts to a 97-87-25 record. While coaching one of the youngest teams in the NHL, with an average age of 25 and eight players aged 21 or younger, Quinn's team ranked eighth in the league in power-play percentage (22.1%) and tied for tenth in wins when surrendering the first goal (52). In the 2020-21 season, Adam Fox, who debuted under Quinn, was awarded the Norris Trophy as the league's best defenseman.

Before the Rangers, Quinn served five years as the head coach at Boston University (2013-2018). His Terriers were in the 2015 Frozen Four with Omaha. He led BU to a record of 105-69-21 and four-straight NCAA tournament appearances, including three regional finals and one National Championship game (2015). He also helped the Terriers to two Hockey East regular season titles, and two conference tournament championships. After the 2015 season, Quinn was named the Hockey East and New England Coach of the Year.

Quinn replaces Bob Boughner, who was fired on July 1.
