North Dakota Gets Past Mavericks, 6-4

Box Score

GRAND FORKS, N.D. – North Dakota scored two late goals to break a 4-4 tie and edge the Omaha hockey team 6-4 on Friday night at Ralph Engelstad Arena.

Steven Spinner scored two goals for the Mavericks who fell to 15-13-5 and 8-11-2-0/0 in the NCHC with their sixth straight loss to UND.  The Fighting Hawks improved to 16-13-3 and 9-11-1-1/0.

With the game tied entering the third period, Christian Wolanin put UND back in front when his shot from the point beat Alex Blankenburg who had been knocked back into his net.  After a video review, referees upheld the goal at 4:04.

A little more than four minutes later, the Mavericks tied the game a second time when Fredrik Olofsson took a pass from David Pope and fired home his 11th goal of the year.

But Tyson Jost put UND ahead to stay at 14:11 when he stickhandled through traffic before firing a shot past Blankenburg for his second of the game.

Brock Boeser made a steal 44 seconds later and scored an unassisted goal from the low slot to make it 6-4.

Blankenburg finished with 31 saves while UND's Cam Johnson stopped 33.

North Dakota broke on top when Johnny Simonson's shot from deep down the left wing wall clanked off the post and past Blankenburg at 10:49 of the first period.

Jost doubled UND's lead when he wheeled out from behind the UNO net and roofed a shot over Blankenburg at 17:24.

UND made it 3-0 just 50 seconds into the second when Boeser steered home a pass from Zach Yon on a power play.

The Mavericks started their comeback off a tic-tac-toe play.  Dean Stewart kept the puck at the blue line and found Teemu Pulkkinen at the goal line.  He quickly threw the puck to the slot where Spinner hammered it past Johnson at 7:57.

Less than two minutes later, Spinner lit the lamp again, collecting the rebound of a tip by Pulkkinen and tucking it past Johnson for his eight goal of the year.  The goal was upheld after a lengthy video review.

The Mavericks tied the game at 13:59 when Austin Ortega's shot from in close was stopped but Pope jammed it under the pad of Johnson for his 12th of the year.

Olofsson finished with a goal and an assist while Ortega and Pulkkinen each had two assists.

The series concludes on Saturday at 7:07 p.m.
