Denver Shuts Out Mavericks 5-0 To Sweep Series

Box Score DENVER, Colo. – No. 3 Denver finished off a sweep of the No. 18 Omaha hockey team, shutting out the Mavericks 5-0 on Saturday night at Magness Arena.

The loss drops UNO to 14-10-4 overall and 7-8-1-0/0 in the NCHC, putting them in fifth place.  The Pioneers improved to 18-6-4 overall and 10-3-3-0/2 in the conference, tying them with Minnesota Duluth for first.

The Pioneers took advantage of their first power play of the game.  Colin Staub hammered home a feed from Evan Janssen at 6:07 to put DU in front.

Matt Marcinew made it 2-0 when he knocked in the rebound of a shot by Staub at 12:28.

Logan O'Connor added a third goal, squeezing the puck between Evan Weninger and the near post at 16:30.

The Pioneers got an even-strength goal from Matt VanVoorhis and another power play tally from Staub to stretch their lead to 5-0 after two.

Weninger made 38 saves in the game as the Mavericks gave up 43 shots for the second straight night.  DU goalie Tanner Jaillet got the win with 16 saves before ceding the net to Evan Cowley in the final nine minutes.  Cowley made six saves.

The Mavericks continue their four-game road trip at Minnesota Duluth on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 3-4.
