Weninger, Mavericks Blank Miami, 2-0

Box Score OMAHA, Neb. – Sophomore Evan Weninger made 30 saves, and Steven Spinner had a goal and an assist as the No. 19 Omaha hockey team shutout Miami 2-0 on Saturday night at Baxter Arena.

The Mavericks earned three points with the win and four in the two-game series to move into fourth place in the NCHC with a record of 7-6-1-0/0.  They are now 14-8-4 overall.  The RedHawks fell to 8-10-6 overall and 4-6-4-1/1 in the conference, putting them seventh.

Weninger earned his second shutout of the season and third of his career in the win.  He was busiest in late in the third period when Jordan Klehr was penalized for interference and Miami pulled goalie Ryan Larkin for an extra attacker.  Weninger made a point-blank stop on sniper Anthony Louis to preserve the shutout.  He was named the first star of the game.

UNO picked up both goals with its special teams.  The Mavericks' power play is the best in the NCHC, and it clicked late in the first period to put them ahead.  Ian Brady's shot from the blue line was knocked down in front, and Spinner threw the puck behind his back to Fredrik Olofsson who fired home his seventh goal of the year.

In the second period, UNO doubled its lead with its NCAA-best ninth shorthanded goal of the season.  Spinner poked the puck out to the neutral zone and then forced a turnover by defenseman Louis Belpedio.  Spinner raced in and threaded the puck between the legs of goaltender Ryan Larkin for his second goal of the weekend.

The Mavericks improved to 5-7-2 at home with just four home games remaining in the regular season.

Omaha is on the road for the next two weeks beginning with a trip to second-place Denver on Jan. 27-28.
