Mavericks Forge 3-3 Tie With RedHawks

Box Score OMAHA, Neb. – Junior Jake Randolph scored a power play goal late in the third period, helping the No. 19 Omaha hockey team forge a 3-3 tie with Miami on Friday night at Baxter Arena.

Miami went on to win a 3-on-3 shootout to earn two points in the NCHC standings while the Mavericks got one.  UNO is now 13-8-4 overall and 6-6-1-0-/0 in the NCHC, putting it in a tie with St. Cloud State for fifth place.  The RedHawks are now 8-9-6 overall and 4-5-4-1/0 in the conference, putting them in seventh.

It was the first 3-on-3 overtime for UNO this season and just the second for the Mavericks since the NCHC instituted the rule.  Both have come against Miami.

The RedHawks trailed the Mavericks 2-0 early but came back to tie the game and got their first lead just 21 seconds into the third period when Carson Meyer tipped in a pass from Anthony Louis.

The Mavericks tied the game at 13:44 during their fifth power play of the game.  On a breakout from the UNO zone, Luc Snuggerud dropped a pass to Austin Ortega who went streaking through the MU defense into the offensive zone.  He threw a cross-ice pass to Randolph who was charging the net, and Randolph tapped home his fifth goal of the year.

UNO was given a power play with 2.1 seconds remaining in the first overtime, and it carried over into the second overtime.  The Mavericks couldn't score with a 4-on-3 man advantage, and that led to a goal from Miami defenseman Scott Dornbrock that gave the RedHawks the extra standings point.

Evan Weninger made 32 saves while Ryan Larkin had 29 stops for Miami which outshot UNO, 35-32.

The Mavericks forged ahead nearly halfway through the first period.  Fredrik Olofsson fired a shot from the top of the slot that was tipped home by Steven Spinner for his fifth goal of the season.

Just 59 seconds later, the Mavericks doubled their lead.  Justin Parizek scooped up the puck off the end boards and tucked it in front.  Teemu Pulkkinen slipped the puck just inside the left post at 10:31.

Miami drew to within one on a late power play.  Louie Belpedio fired home a centering pass from Anthony Louis at 17:13.

The RedHawks tied the game midway through the second period.  Dornbrock's point shot was blocked, but Willie Knierim flicked the rebound past Weninger at 11:44.

The two teams finish the series on Saturday at 7:37 p.m.  The game will air live on NET and Fox College Sports Pacific.
