MADISON, Ill. – The Omaha men's golf team tied for sixth at the Derek Dolenc Invitational at SIUE on Tuesday.
The Mavericks closed with a team round of 301 to finish at 888 for the 54-hole tournament, tying them with Murray State. It was UNO's best tournament score of the fall season and the fourth-best in the Division I era.
Missouri State won the event with a total of 875 while host SIUE was second at 877. Bradley took third at 880. Just 13 strokes separated the top eight teams.
Sophomore
Kevin Gordon led the Mavericks in scoring for the second time this year, posting a three-round total of 218, five over par. He carded 75 in the final round to help him finish 11th overall in the field of 87 golfers.
Freshmen
Max Hellstrom and
Kelly Brown had the best scores of their young careers. Hellstrom had a career-best round of 70 on Tuesday, one under par, to finish at 222, good for 23rd while Brown shot 229 for the tournament including a final round of 79. He finished in a tie for 45th.
In between, senior
Ben Maskus was third for UNO and tied for 24th overall with a score of 223. He shot 78 in round three to finish the event 10 over par.
Mitch Ryan concluded the scoring for UNO, carding a final round of 78 to finish at 236, good for 67th.
The Mavericks return to the course on Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 3-4, at the Bill Ross Intercollegiate at UMKC.
