Omaha Softball Heads to Fort Wayne

OMAHA, Neb. – The Mavericks return to the road with a three-game series against the IPFW Mastodons Saturday-Sunday, April 2-3, in Fort Wayne, Ind.  Saturday's doubleheader begins at 9:30 a.m. (CT), and the final on Sunday will start at 10 a.m. (CT).

Leading Off

The Omaha offense leads the Summit League in almost every category.  The Mavericks lead the league in doubles (46), extra base hits (84), hits (228), home runs (30), runs (162), RBI (152), slugging percentage (.441), triples (8), and total bases (380).  UNO also leads the league in shut-outs with four.

The 2016 Mavericks

Omaha enters the weekend with a 14-19 record.  The Mavericks are coming off a two game sweep of IUPUI in Omaha to kickoff conference play. Omaha defeated the Jaguars in a doubleheader on Friday, before Saturday's contest was rained out.

Senior Sydney Hames leads the Mavericks with a .355 batting average, .618 slugging percentage, and .385 on-base percentage.  The third baseman ranks first in the league in hits (39), second in slugging percentage, RBI (25), and assists (82). Hames also ranks third in home runs and fifth in batting average.

Junior Nicole Warren leads the Summit League with nine home runs and 28 RBI.  Warren has a .259 average this season and has two triples.

Freshman Kourtney Pock is second on the team with a .333 batting average including six doubles and three home runs with 21 RBI.  Two of her three homers this season have been grand slams. Pock earned back-to-back Summit League Player of the Week awards on March 14th and 21st.

Freshman Laura Roecker leads Omaha in the circle with a 7-9 record and a team-low 5.36 ERA over 96.2 innings pitched.  The right-hander is second in the league in wins and is fourth in strike outs (49). For Roecker's performance in the series against IUPUI, she earned her second Summit League Pitcher of the Week honor of the season.

Abbie Clanton is tied for the team lead with 23 appearances (eight starts).  Clanton is 5-7 on the season with a 6.36 ERA with 36 strikeouts, including firing a no-hitter at Northern Colorado on March 8.

The Mavericks are led by 17th year head coach Jeanne Scarpello.  Scarpello is the program's winningest coach with a career mark of 668-251-1.  Coach Scarpello led UNO to the 2001 NCAA Division II National Title and was part of the NFCA National Coaching Staff of the Year.  During the Division II era, she was a two-time MIAA Coach of the Year (2010, 2011) and a four-time NCC Coach of the Year (2001, 2004, 2006, 2008).  Her teams made 12 straight NCAA DII Tournament appearances (2000-2011) while earning eight conference regular-season championships and five conference tournament championships.  Coach Scarpello picked up her 500th career win on Feb. 20, 2011 against Texas A&M International.

Fort Wayne Mastodons

Series Record: Omaha owns a 4-2 series record over Fort Wayne and the Mavs swept a three game set over the Mastodons last season in Omaha by scores of 2-1, 8-0, and 5-0.

Scouting the Mastodons:  Fort Wayne enters the weekend matchup against Omaha with a record of 10-23 (1-2 Summit League).  The Mastodons dropped two of three at home against South Dakota to open up conference play last weekend and lost a 5-0 decision to No. 22 Notre Dame on Wednesday evening.

Fort Wayne is led by Sierra Miranda with a .367 batting average, six doubles, and 19 runs scored. Caitlyn DeLong has a .262 batting average with team high four dingers. Emily Olszewski is hitting .286 with six doubles and a team high 14 RBI. 

The Mastodons are led in the circle by Sarah Lazarowich who is 4-12 in 14 starts on the season, with a 5.02 ERA. Lazarowich has gone the distance in six games and has a team high 48 punch outs. Elizabeth Snodgrass has made 12 starts on the season, going 1-4 with a 4.99 ERA and 33 strikeouts.

Germaine Fairchild enters her 2nd season leading the Mastodons program.  Last season, Fort Wayne finished with a 3-45 overall record and was 2-16 in Summit League play.

Keys to Victory

Through the first 33 games of the season, several things have proven to be indicators of Omaha's success. The Mavericks hold an 11-3 record when scoring first and sit at 11-1 on the year when outhitting their opponent. Additionally, the Mavericks are 8-0 when leading after six innings and 6-3 when scoring six or more runs.

On Deck

The Mavericks return home for a midweek doubleheader against Drake on Wednesday, April 6.  Starting at 4 p.m. (CT).

Omaha will also host South Dakota State next weekend for a three game series with a doubleheader on April 9 and a single game on April 10. The doubleheader on April 9 with begin at noon (CT) and the single game on April 10 starts at 11 a.m. (CT).  The Mavericks will also honor all alumni during Saturday's doubleheader.
