Box Score OMAHA, Neb. – Tyler Vesel and Jake Guentzel each had two goals to power the No. 12 Omaha hockey team to a 6-3 win over Western Michigan at Baxter Arena.
The Mavericks swept the weekend series and improved to 18-9-1 overall and 8-9-1-0/0 in the NCHC, good for a tie with Minnesota Duluth for fourth place. They have won three straight games after dropping the previous four.
The Broncos remained in seventh place in the conference, dropping to 4-13-1-1/0 and 7-18-3 overall.
Western Michigan struck just 21 seconds into the game when Fredrik Tiffels sent a pass to the slot that caromed into the net off the skate of teammate Michael Rebry.
The Mavericks tied the game while shorthanded. Justin Parizek knocked the puck loose from a Western Michigan defenseman at the UNO blue line and raced the other way, firing a shot past goalie Lukas Hafner at 13:18. It was UNO's second shorthanded goal of the weekend and moved it into the NCHC lead with eight this season.
But on the continuation of its power play, the Broncos retook the lead when Nolan LaPorte got loose in front of Evan Weninger and lifted a shot over his shoulder.
The Mavericks again tied the game late in the first. Vesel won a faceoff back to Brian Cooper. Vesel then tipped Cooper's shot past Hafner at 19:19 for his second goal of the weekend.
UNO got its first lead of the game just 43 seconds into the second period. While on a 5-on-3 power play, Jake Randolph set up Guentzel for a tap in goal, his 13th of the year.
Vesel picked up his second of the night to make it 4-2. He got loose at center ice and Parizek hit him with a pass that sent him in on a breakaway. He slipped a backhander by Hafner for his third goal of the weekend.
After Western Michigan took its timeout, the Mavericks pounced for another goal. Mason Morelli crashed the net and swept the puck under Hafner for his fourth goal in the last five games.
In the third, Guentzel picked up his second, redirecting a pass from Ian Brady on the power play at 5:15. It was his 14th goal of the season, tying a career best for goals in season. He now leads the NCHC in scoring with 38 points.
The Broncos finished the scoring when Rebry scored his second of the night on a power play at 11:59.
Weninger made 31 saves to earn the win while Hafner turned aside 27 shots.
The game was just the second this season that the Mavericks had won when allowing the first goal of the game (2-8-0).
Parizek led all scorers with a goal and three assists.
Guentzel played in his 100th career game on Saturday, one day after Austin Ortega reached the same milestone.
Omaha is back on home ice to host St. Cloud State on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 19-20.
