Austin Ortega tied the NCAA record for game-winning goals, pushing the Omaha hockey team past Lake Superior State, 4-1, on Friday night at Baxter Arena.
Ortega fired home a pass from
Fredrik Olofsson at 9:47 of the second period to give UNO a 2-0 lead in the game. Ortega joined Brett Sterling of Colorado College and Kyle Rau of Minnesota who also have 23 career game-winning goals. It was Ortega's third game winner of the season and his team-leading 13th overall.
Omaha improved to 10-6-3 this season while the Lakers dipped to 8-10-1. The two teams finish the series on Saturday with an early 4:07 p.m. face-off.
The Mavericks snapped a scoreless tie during a power play early in the second period.
Steven Spinner carried the puck to the top of the face-off circles before feeding the puck back to the left wing for
Justin Parizek. He hammered a shot just inside the near corner at 6:48.
Leading 2-0 in the third, the Mavericks saw their lead cut in half when J.T. Henke fired in a shot off the crossbar at 3:09.
However, Olofsson scored at 8:27 to restore the two-goal lead, banking in a shot off a Lake Superior State defenseman.
Tyler Vesel added his eighth goal of the season at 12:28, blasting the puck past goalie Gordon Defiel from the top of the slot.
Olofsson finished the night with three points (1-2-3) and now has scored in all five games since returning from an injury on Dec. 2 (4-3-7).
Evan Weninger stopped 28 shots to improve to 7-3-2 while Defiel made 39 saves as the Mavericks outshot the Lakers, 43-29.
