Box Score MADISON, Wis. – The Omaha hockey team built a two-goal lead in the first period and then held on for a 3-3 tie at Wisconsin on Friday night at the Kohl Center.
Evan Weninger made a career-high 47 saves to preserve the deadlock and move the Mavericks to 7-5-3 overall. Wisconsin, which outshot the Mavericks, 50-30, is now 7-5-1.
Trailing the Mavericks 3-2 early in the third, UW sophomore defenseman Peter Tischke tipped in a shot by Ryan Wagner at 3:46 to tie the game.
Wisconsin would go on to beat the Mavericks in an exhibition shootout that followed overtime, but the game went down as a tie for NCAA record keeping.
Wisconsin opened the scoring at 7:04 of the first period. Wagner spun out from behind the net and roofed a shot over Weninger for his fourth goal of the season.
The Mavericks struck back just 2:34 later when
Austin Ortega threw a pass to
Teemu Pulkkinen. He cut to the net and slipped a backhander under goalie Jack Berry for his second goal of the year.
UNO took the lead when
Riley Alferd forced a giveaway.
Ryan Galt threw the puck to the slot where
Tristan Keck tipped it home at 11:06.
The Mavericks stretched that lead while shorthanded.
Dean Stewart cleared the puck around the wall, and
Justin Parizek caught up to it at center. He fed
Fredrik Olofsson on the left wing, and he fired a shot just under the crossbar to make it 3-1. Olofsson was playing his first game after missing the last four games with an injury.
The Badgers carried the play in the second period, outshooting the Mavericks 16-6. They finally broke through when Grant Besse tipped in a shot by Jake Linhart at 16:00 to make it 3-2 after two.
The 50 shots allowed by the Mavericks were the most since their double overtime playoff loss to Denver in last season's NCHC playoff series.
The Mavericks were 0-for-4 on the power play while holding Wisconsin 0-for-6 with the man advantage.
The two teams finish the series on Saturday at 8:07 p.m.
