Mavericks Outlast Tigers For First NCHC Win, 6-4

Box Score OMAHA, Neb. – The Omaha hockey team finished a six-game home stand with a wild 6-4 win over Colorado College, earning their first NCHC win of the season.

The Mavericks split their first NCHC series of the season and improved their record to 4-3-1 overall and 1-1-0-0/0 in the NCHC.  The Tigers dropped to 3-5-0 overall and 1-1-0-0/0 in the conference.

In a back-and-fourth second period, the Mavericks built on a 2-1 lead with three goals in a span of 4:38.  Teemu Pulkkinen made it 3-1 with his first collegiate goal.  He knocked in centering pass from Austin Ortega at 8:34.

Then at 11:31, Zach Jordan scored his first collegiate goal when he took a pass from David Pope and raced in alone on goalie Jacob Nehama, beating him with a sharp wrist shot.

The barrage ended when Tyler Vesel's shot from the left point hit the crowd in front of the net, eventually trickling off Ortega, off the post and across the goal line at 13:12.  The goal would stand up as Ortega's 22nd career game-winning goal, putting him one from tying the NCAA record owned by former Tiger Brett Sterling.

But the Tigers fought back with a goal from Luc Gerdes at 16:06 and a power play marker from Mason Bergh, his second of the night, to make it 5-3 after two.

In the third, Vesel picked up a goal of his own, racing to a loose puck and poking it over Nehama who had come out to the face-off circle trying to gain control.  The puck sailed over him into the vacated net at 16:53.

The Tigers added a second goal from Gerdes at 19:27 to close the scoring.

Kris Oldham earned his second career win in net with 31 saves while Nehama made 27 saves in the loss.

The Mavericks opened the scoring just 3:47 into the game when Luc Snuggerud fired a shot from the high slot that beat Nehama inside the near post for his third goal of the season.

Ortega doubled the lead during UNO's second power play of the game.  He fired home a pass from Vesel at 9:13.

The Tigers got one goal back at 17:47 when Bergh tipped in a shot from Ben Israel with the teams skating four on four.

Pope tied a school record with four assists in the game.  The last Maverick to do so was Matt White at Alaska Anchorage on Feb. 16, 2013.

Ortega finished the night with two goals and an assist.  He now has 11 points, tying him with Vesel for the team lead.  Vesel had a goal and two assists.

The Mavericks are back on the road next weekend, visiting Miami for games on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 11-12.
