Box Score OMAHA, Neb. – Colorado College scored two early goals and then held on for a 2-1 win over the Omaha hockey team on Friday night at Baxter Arena.
The game was the NCHC opener for both schools. The loss dropped the Mavericks to 3-3-1 overall and 0-1-0-0/0 in the NCHC while the Tigers improved to 3-4-0 overall and 1-0-0-0/0 in the conference.
Trailing 2-0, the Mavericks started the third period with a power play, and
Austin Ortega struck 40 seconds in when he beat goalie Jacob Nehama with a shot along the ice for his team-leading fifth goal of the season. It also was his 100th career point, making him the 15th Maverick to reach that mark.
The Mavericks outshot the Tigers 32-19 including a 22-10 edge through the final two periods but could not net the equalizer with goaltender
Evan Weninger pulled for an extra attacker.
The Tigers used a power play to seize the lead just 1:37 into the game. Mason Bergh picked up the rebound of a shot by Teemu Kivihalme and knocked it
Evan Weninger.
Less than two minutes later, the Tigers doubled their lead when Kade Kehoe tipped in a shot by Cole McCaskill for his first collegiate goal.
Nehama, in his first start of the season, made 31 saves.
The two teams finish the series on Saturday at 7:07 p.m.
