Tyler Vesel scored a game-tying powerplay goal midway through the second period to help the Omaha hockey team battle back for a 2-2 tie with Northern Michigan on Friday night.
The game was the first of a six-game road trip for the Mavericks who are now 6-5-2 overall. Northern Michigan is now 3-8-2.
The two teams played a three-on-three overtime following the regular overtime period with the Wildcats winning the exhibition frame with 8.3 seconds to go. The goal did not change the outcome of the game and remains a tie by NCAA rules.
The Mavericks scored first for the 10th time in 13 games when
Teemu Pulkkinen tossed the puck to the front of the net where it was batted out of the air by
Justin Parizek for his third goal of the season. Parizek had returned to the lineup after missing the last six games with an injury.
Northern Michigan tied the game just 42 seconds later when the Mavericks got caught in a bad line change, leading to a 2-on-1. Dominik Shine hammered home a pass from Brock Maschmeyer at 10:42.
Then 35 seconds later, the Wildcats had their first lead when Troy Loggins rattled the puck in off the far post for his third goal of the season.
The Mavericks tied the game during a five-minute power play midway through the second period.
Austin Ortega cycled the puck behind the Wildcats' net, eventually throwing a pass in front to
Vesel. He snapped the puck over the glove hand of goalie Atte Tolvanen at 9:56 for his sixth goal of the year.
The Mavericks continued their season-opening streak on the man advantage, having now scored at least one powerplay goal in all 13 games.
David Pope finished the night with two assists.
Kris Oldham made 30 saves for UNO while Tolvanen stopped 37 shots.
The two teams finish the series on Saturday at 6:07 p.m. CT.
