Box Score OMAHA, Neb. – The Omaha hockey team got two third-period goals but fell just short of a comeback, losing 3-2 to No. 2 Minnesota Duluth on Saturday at Baxter Arena.
UMD swept the weekend series to improve to 10-2-2 overall and 7-1-0-0 in the NCHC, good for first place. The Mavericks are now 6-5-1 overall and 3-3-0-0 in the conference, putting them in a tie with Western Michigan for third.
Trailing 3-0 entering the third, the Mavericks used their red-hot power play to get on the board.
Ian Brady fired home a pass from
Steven Spinner at 2:04 for his second goal of the season.
Just 1:45 later, UNO closed the gap to one when
David Pope scooped up the rebound of a shot by
Tyler Vesel and fired it home for another powerplay goal.
Pressing for the equalizer, the Mavericks caught a bad break when
Luc Snuggerud was given a tripping penalty with 2:26 remaining in the game. They killed off the penalty but ran out of time to mount any final attack.
UNO outplayed the Bulldogs for long stretches of the game, outshooting them 16-5 in the scoreless first period and 11-4 in the third.
UMD broke the scoreless tie at 1:17 of the second period. Andrew Johnson took a pass from Kyle Osterberg and fired a shot past UNO goalie
Kris Oldham who had gotten tied up with traffic in his crease.
The Bulldogs doubled their lead while killing a penalty. Alex Iafallo lifted a loose puck out of his own end, sending Dominic Toninato on a breakaway. He slipped the puck around Oldham at 5:15. It was the first shorthanded goal surrendered by the Mavericks this season.
UMD made it 3-0 on a power play goal from Kyle Osterberg at 10:20.
Oldham made 17 saves in the loss and picked up his first collegiate assist on Brady's goal. UMD's Hunter Miska stopped 33 to earn his ninth win of the year.
The Mavericks will play their next six games on the road beginning with a series at Northern Michigan on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 25-26.
