POWELLS POINT, N.C. – Sophomore
Kevin Gordon shot a school record score for 54 holes to lead the Omaha men's golf team to a ninth-place finish at the ODU/OBX Intercollegiate, the Mavericks' last event of the fall.
For the third straight day, Gordon posted a below-par score, shooting one-under-par 70 in the final round at the Kilmarlic Golf Club to finish in a tie for fourth with a score of 208, five under par. The 54-hole score was a career best by eight strokes and bested the previous school record of 213 shot by teammate
Ben Maskus in March of this year.
Gordon's final round featured a bogey on the first hole but pars the rest of the way except for birdies on 14 and 16.
The Mavericks shot 294 on the final day to finish at 875 for the tournament, 23 over par. The team score is also a school record for a 54-hole event, one stroke better than the score from the Desert Shootout on March 18-19, 2016.
Campbell won the event with a score of 845, one stroke better than host Old Dominion. Akron finished third at 848.
Maskus was second for the Mavericks and tied for 39th overall with a nine-over total of 222 that included a final round of 73. He was two strokes ahead of teammate
Mitch Ryan who tied for 45th in the field of 93 golfers after closing with a round of 77.
Max Hellstrom shot 74 in round three to finish at 228, fourth for the Mavericks and 59th overall.
Kelly Brown completed the scoring with a score of 230 including a final round of 81. He finished in a tie for 66th.
The Mavericks will resume play in February.
