Austin Ortega scored at 1:15 of overtime to give the Omaha hockey team a 4-3 win over Alaska on Saturday night at the Carlson Center.
With the win, the Mavericks took home the Brice Alaska Goal Rush championship, winning both games of the tournament. They are the first team from outside Alaska to win the tournament in its nine-year history.
On the game-winning goal,
Jake Randolph stationed in the right corner, spotted Ortega sneaking in from the left wing. He hit him with a pin-point pass across the crease that Ortega hammered home for his 21st career game-winning goal. He's now two from tying the NCAA record.
Ortega was named the tournament's most valuable player.
Alaska forced the overtime with goals early in the third period from Troy Van Tetering and Marcus Basara, erasing a 3-1 UNO lead. The Mavericks then survived a penalty kill in the final two minutes to reach overtime.
The Mavericks broke through for the game's first goal late in the first period.
Mason Morelli made a steal at center ice and walked in for a breakaway, beating goalie Davis Jones over his glove hand. The shorthanded goal came at 16:12.
Alaska tied the game early in the second when Zach Fry banged home a pass from Taylor Munson at 1:57.
The Mavericks answered less than two minutes later when
Tyler Vesel knocked in a bouncing puck for his first goal of the season.
Luc Snuggerud put the Mavericks up 3-1 when he zipped home a pass from Randolph for his first goal of the season at 16:31.
Randolph finished the night with three assists and had four for the weekend. He was named to the all-tournament team.
Evan Weninger earned the win in goal with 22 saves while Alaska's Jones stopped 24 in the loss.
The Mavericks return home for six straight home games starting with a series against Vermont of Hockey East on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 21-22.
