Mavericks Blitz Tigers 6-1 To End Streak

Box Score COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The No. 11/12 Omaha hockey team scored four goals in the second period en route to a 6-1 win over Colorado College on Saturday night at Broadmoor World Arena.

Mason Morelli led the assault with a goal and two assists while Ian Brady also had three assists.  In all, five Mavericks registered a multi-point game.

The win snapped a season-high four-game losing streak for the Mavericks and improved their record to 16-9-1 overall and 6-9-1-0/0 in the NCHC, putting them in a tie with Minnesota Duluth and Miami for fourth.  The Tigers fell to 6-19-1 overall and 4-11-1-0/0 in the conference, putting them in eighth.

The Mavericks opened the scoring at 4:48 of the first period with the teams skating four-on-four.  Mason Morelli won the face-off and Ryan Galt pushed the puck back to Jordan Klehr.  Klehr stepped down the left wing and wristed the puck past goalie Jacob Nehama for his first collegiate goal.

Omaha doubled its lead on a power play less than a minute and a half later.  Brady fed Luc Snuggerud for a blast through traffic that found the net at 6:14.  It was Snuggerud's third goal of the season, a new career high.

In the second, the Mavericks poured it on.  Steven Spinner notched his fifth goal of the year at 1:34.  He took a pass from Morelli and cut to the net, sliding the puck past Nehama.

Jake Guentzel made it 4-0 when he finished of a strong cycle in the Tigers' end.  His shot from the top of the slot found the net just under the crossbar for his 12th goal of the season.

Morelli continued his strong play of late, driving the net to knock in the rebound of a wrap-around attempt by Luke Nogard.  It was Morelli's third goal in three games, and it came against back-up goalie Tyler Marble who was inserted for Nehama after UNO's fourth goal.

Justin Parizek pushed the lead to 6-0 when his shot through traffic found the net for a powerplay tally at 16:48.

Colorado College broke up Evan Weninger's shutout bid when Hunter Fejes scored his team-leading 12th goal of the year at 18:52.

Weninger improved to 11-3-0 this season, making just 11 saves as the Mavericks held the Tigers to just 12 shots, a season low for the Mavericks.

With the win, the Mavericks extended their streak of earning points in Colorado Springs.  In five series there, the Mavericks are 4-0-1 in the second game of the weekend series.

The Mavericks have a week off before resuming play on Feb. 12-13 against Western Michigan.
