Box Score COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The UNO Mavericks lost to Colorado College, 5-1, in the first game of a weekend series at Colorado Springs World Arena.
The Mavericks, who lost their season high fourth straight game, dropped to 15-9-1 overall and 5-9-1-0/0 in the NCHC, putting them sixth. The Tigers improved to 6-18-1 overall and 4-10-1-0/0 in the conference, now just three points behind the Mavericks.
Trailing 2-1 entering the third period, the Mavericks gave up goals to Trevor Gooch at 9:04 and to Christian Heil at 15:20, stifling their comeback chances. Sam Rothstein added a shorthanded, empty-net goal for the Tigers at 16:20 to complete the scoring.
Evan Weninger, making his first start since Jan. 8 because of injury, made 25 saves while CC's Jacob Nehama stopped 36 shots as UNO outshot the Tigers, 37-30.
Colorado College broke the scoreless tie at 3:29 of the second period. Andrew Farny's shot from the blue line ricocheted directly to Mason Bergh who tucked the puck past Weninger for a powerplay goal.
The Tigers stretched their lead with another power play later in the period. Hunter Fejes sent the puck down low to Luc Gerdes who tipped the pass over Weninger at 6:38.
UNO got one goal back before the period ended.
Jake Guentzel, stationed at the left face-off circle, dropped a pass back to
Brian Cooper who hammered home his fourth goal of the season at 18:58.
Mason Morelli also assisted on the goal.
The Mavericks finished the night 0-for-6 on the power play while CC went 2-for-4.
