Miami Gets Past Mavericks, 3-1

Box Score OMAHA, Neb. – Miami scored a powerplay goal late in the third period to edge the No. 7 Omaha hockey team, 3-1, on Friday night at Baxter Arena.

The tally by defenseman Matthew Caito at 17:57 broke a 1-1 tie and sent the Mavericks to their third straight loss at Baxter Arena.  UNO is now 15-7-1 overall and 5-7-1-0/0 in the NCHC, keeping them in fifth place.  Miami improved to 8-11-3 overall and 3-8-2-2/0 in conference play, putting it in seventh.

The RedHawks broke the scoreless deadlock at 13:47 of the second period.  Kiefer Sherwood won a battle along the left wing wall, stepped to the slot and fired a shot just under the crossbar for his fourth goal of the year.

The Mavericks tied the game on a power play early in the third.  Luc Snuggerud sent a pass to Austin Ortega at the left faceoff circle, and he one-timed the puck past MU goalie Jay Williams at 3:32.

Miami's Kevin Morris added an empty-net goal at 19:33 to complete the scoring.  

The RedHawks outshot the Mavericks 34-28.  Alex Blankenburg took the loss for UNO with 31 saves while Williams made 27.

The two teams finish the series on Saturday at 7:07 p.m.
