Box Score GRAND FORKS, N.D. – No. 1/2 North Dakota scored five unanswered goals to beat the No. 9 Omaha hockey team, 5-1, on Saturday night at Ralph Engelstad Arena.
The win gave UND a split of the series after dropping a 4-3 overtime decisions to the Mavericks on Friday. UNO is now 15-6-0 overall and 5-6-1-0/0 in the NCHC, good for fifth place. North Dakota improved to 19-3-2 and 10-2-0-0/0 in the conference. The win was the 200th for UND at Engelstad Arena.
The Mavericks seized the game's first lead on the power play.
Jake Guentzel fed a pass across the slot to
Tyler Vesel who fired a shot past UND goalie Cam Johnson at 17:55.
Less than two minutes later, UND tied the game on a power play of its own. Drake Caggiula collected the rebound of a shot by Troy Stecher and slipped the puck past
Kirk Thompson at 19:53.
UND grabbed the lead at 3:33 of the second period when Colton Sanderson slid the puck past Thompson during a net-mouth scramble.
Brock Boeser stretched the lead to 3-1 when he took a pass from Gage Ausmus and snapped a shot to the top corner for his 15th goal of the year. The goal spelled end of the night for Thompson who was pulled in favor of
Alex Blankenburg after making six saves.
Troy Stecher and Luke Johnson scored goals 57 seconds apart late in the third to finish the scoring.
Thompson took the loss in goal, falling to 4-4-1. Blankenburg made 12 saves on 14 shots. Cam Johnson stopped 28 shots for UND as the Mavericks held a 29-23 shot advantage.
The Mavericks return home to host Miami on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 22-23. Friday's game begins at 7:37 p.m., one-half hour later to accommodate CBS Sports Network coverage. Saturday's game starts at 7:07 p.m. and can be seen live on NET1 and Fox College Sports.
