Box Score OMAHA, Neb. – No. 17 Denver finished off the first sweep by a visiting team at Baxter Arena, beating the No. 6 Omaha hockey team 4-3 on Saturday night.
The Mavericks fell to 14-5-1 overall and 4-5-1-0/0 in the NCHC, putting them in fifth place. The Pioneers jumped over the Mavericks with the win, improving to fourth place in the conference with a record of 5-4-1-0/0. They are 9-7-4 overall.
The Mavericks trailed 3-0 early in the third period following a goal by Danton Heinen at 3:07 but scored two quick goals to get back in the game. First,
Justin Parizek fired a shot from the top of the slot that was tipped in just under the crossbar by
Steven Spinner. The powerplay goal was the first goal for the Mavericks in 104:20 of action during the series.
Jake Randolph made it 3-2 just 39 seconds later when he beat goalie Tanner Jaillet with a wraparound for his career-best eighth goal of the season. On the goal,
Jake Guentzel picked up an assist. It was his 100th career point making him the 14th Mavericks to hit that mark.
Denver restored the two-goal lead when Dylan Gambrell converted during a DU power play at 8:37, but the Mavericks weren't done.
Mason Morelli scooped up the rebound of a shot by Parizek and backhanded home his second of the season with 4:10 remaining in the game.
The Mavericks could not get the equalizer and fell to 0-5-0 when the opposing team scores first.
The Pioneers broke the scoreless deadlock at 12:19 of the second period. Evan Janssen spun out from behind the UNO net and tucked a backhander by
Kirk Thompson.
Just 35 seconds later, Gabe Levin got loose in the low slot and hammered a one-timer past Thompson off a feed from Colin Staub.
The Mavericks got a five-minute power play when Logan O'Connor was sent off for kneeing
Tyler Vesel. For two minutes of the power play, they had a five-on-three advantage but could not convert, with
Luc Snuggerud and Randolph each hitting posts.
UNO outshot Denver 28-18 for the game. Jaillet earned the win with 25 saves while Thompson fell to 4-3-1 with 14 saves.
The Mavericks are on the road next week, visiting North Dakota on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 15-16.
