Mavericks Drop 10-2 Decision to K-State

Box Score OMAHA, Neb. -- The Omaha baseball team hosted Kansas State in non-conference play Wednesday night, falling 10-2 at Werner Park. The Mavericks are now 15-14 (8-4 Summit League) for the season, while the Wildcats improve to 14-17 (2-7 Big 12).

Reliever Lucas Benenati (1-0) notched the win for K-State, allowing one hit and a walk with three strikeouts over 2.0 innings. Sophomore Mitch Larson (0-1) was tagged with the loss, surrendering the go-ahead run on one hit and a walk in 2.0 innings with one strikeout.

Junior Alex Schultz finished 3-for-4 with a walk and a run scored to lead Omaha at the plate. Senior Justin Threlkeld also had a multi-hit effort, going 2-for-4.

After three scoreless innings to start, Kansas State jumped out 1-0 in the top of the fourth. The Wildcats loaded the bases with a leadoff bunt single from Shane Conlon, a double to right by Max Brown and a single to first by Steve Serratore. Two batters later, Conlon came in on Alex Bee's sacrifice fly to center, giving KSU a slight one-run advantage.

K-State added to its lead in the next inning. Clayton Dalrymple led off with a single to left and went to second on Carter Yagi's sacrifice bunt, stole third and then scored as Tyler Wolfe reached on a Maverick fielding error to make it 2-0.

The Mavericks rallied in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game. With two outs, junior Collin Leif was hit by a pitch and Schultz doubled down the left field line to put two on. Junior Cole Gruber drew a walk to load the bases, and junior Clayton Taylor worked another free pass -- this one on a 3-2 count -- to bring in Leif. Junior Alex Mortensen was promptly hit by a pitch to score Schultz, knotting the score at 2-2.

Kansas State regained the lead at 3-2 in the seventh, as Yagi walked, stole second and was driven in with Wolfe's RBI single to center.

The Wildcats strung together five hits to score six runs in the eighth, stretching their lead to 9-2. They added a final run in the ninth with Serratore's RBI single to plate Brown, leaving the final tally at 10-2.

Omaha returns to action on Friday, April 10, traveling to Fort Wayne. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. (CT) in Fort Wayne, Ind., and a link to live stats will be available on OMavs.com.
