Mavericks Battle Tigers To 2-2 Tie

Box Score OMAHA, Neb. – The No. 7/8 Omaha hockey team skated to a 2-2 with Colorado College on Friday night at the CenturyLink Center, their third straight overtime game.  The Mavericks then lost 1-0 in a shootout.

The tie puts the Mavericks at 17-10-6 overall and 11-8-4-3 in the NCHC.  They dropped to fourth place in the NCHC after Denver's 3-2 win at St. Cloud State moved it into a tie with Miami for second place.  The Tigers, unbeaten in their last three, are now 6-23-3 overall and 2-18-3-1 in the NCHC, good for eighth place.

The Mavericks got the lead at 8:31 of the first period.  While killing a penalty, Jake Guentzel broke down the left wing, eventually throwing the puck across to Justin Parizek who was trailing the play.  Parizek fired the puck into a half-empty net for his career-best 10th goal of the year.  It was UNO's first shorthanded goal since Oct. 17 and just its second of the year.

The Tigers tied the game on a power play just past the halfway mark of the second period.  Peter Maric's backhander through traffic beat Ryan Massa who was screened on the play.

The Mavericks retook the lead on their own power play at 17:21 of the period.  Tyler Vesel passed the puck across the crease to Parizek who fired in a sharp-angle shot off the post past goalie Tyler Marble.

But CC battled back to tie it again in the final minute.  Matt Hansen finished off a pass from Christian Heil at 19:33 for his first goal of the year.

After a scoreless third period and overtime, the Tigers got a goal from Cody Bradley in the first round.  It stood up as the shootout winner after Marble stopped all three UNO shooters.

The Mavericks are now winless in their last five games (0-2-3), a season high.

The final game of the series will be played on Saturday at 7:07 p.m.
