Golden Eagles Take Down Omaha, 14-6

Box Score TULSA, Okla. -- The Omaha baseball team dropped its third straight game of the weekend on Sunday, falling 14-6 to Oral Roberts at J.L. Johnson Stadium. With the loss, the Mavericks move to 13-11 (6-3 Summit League) on the year, while the Golden Eagles improve to 17-9 (8-1 Summit League).

ORU starter Kurt Giller (4-3) picked up the win, allowing five runs on seven hits and a walk with four strikeouts over 5.0 innings. Senior left-hander Cole Volkers (1-1) took the loss, surrendering four runs on five hits and three walks in a 1.1-inning relief appearance.

Juniors Alex Schultz and Alex Mortensen led Omaha at the plate, with each registering a two-run home run. Mortensen finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI, while Schultz was 2-for-5 with a run and three RBI. Senior Daniel Jewett also had a multi-hit day, going 2-for-3 on the afternoon.

Audie Afenir led the charge for Oral Roberts, finishing 4-for-5 with four RBI and a run scored, and Matt Brandy was 3-for-5 while scoring three times.

ORU took an early lead with two runs on three hits in the bottom of the first inning for a 2-0 advantage. Omaha answered immediately in the top of the second, with Mortensen leading off with an infield single and senior Justin Threlkeld walking. A Jewett sacrifice bunt moved both runners into scoring position, and Mortensen scored on an RBI groundout by Volkers to make it 2-1. The Golden Eagles, however, added a run in the third and two more in the fourth to stretch their lead to 5-1.

The Mavericks roared back in the fifth, as Schultz and Mortensen both knocked out two-run homers, the first for both this season. Schultz's roundtripper cut ORU's lead to 5-3, and Mortensen's swiftly tied the game at 5-5, finishing off a four-run, four-hit inning for UNO.

Oral Roberts, though, exploded for three runs on four hits in the fifth, then followed with five runs on four hits and an error in the sixth to surge ahead 13-5. The Golden Eagles added one more run with four hits in the seventh, holding a 14-5 advantage.

UNO managed one more run in the ninth when Schultz singled up the middle to drive in freshman Cole Patterson, bringing the final tally to 14-6.

Omaha returns to action on Wednesday, April 1, tangling with in-state rival Nebraska in non-conference play. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m. at Werner Park, and links to live stats and audio will be available on OMavs.com.
