OMAHA, NEB. – Omaha's Drew Borner laced a two-run hit in the bottom of the 10th to cap a game-winning two-out rally that lifted the Mavericks to a 7-6 win over South Dakota State University in the Summit League Championship tournament. With the comeback win over SDSU (16-36, 12-18), Omaha (20-29, 12-16) advances in the elimination bracket to a 4:00 p.m. CT Friday afternoon game against either Oral Roberts University or North Dakota State University, pending the outcome of their winner's bracket game Thursday night.
Playing as the home team in the double-elimination tournament, Omaha trailed 6-5 in the bottom of the 10th before loading the bases against SDSU relief ace Dylan Driessen. Borner, facing his former Millard West High School teammate, took a 93-mph fastball down the right field line, bringing in Paul Schuyler (walked) and Cardel Dick (singled) with the tying and winning runs.
Things looked bleak for Omaha early, as they were held hitless by starter Caleb Duerr through five innings, trailing 5-0. In the sixth, Duerr hit Sam Beck with a pitch and Jackson Trout to start the inning, and Henry Zipay stroked a run-scoring single to left to cut the SDSU lead to 5-1. Tyler Bishop then went the other way himself, drilling a 2-1 pitch to right field for the three-run homer, cutting the Jackrabbits lead to 5-3. With the hit, Summit League Player of the Year Henry Zipay extended his on-base streak to 31 games, longest on the team this season.
Omaha chased reliever Jake Groble in the ninth as they tied the game. After Mason Gaines singled, Blake Stenger reached on a bunt hit. After Driessen entered the game, Tyler Palmer beat out another bunt, loading the bases for Borner, whose sacrifice fly to right tied the score 5-5. Driessen (L, 2-3) coaxed two ground balls to get out of the bases loaded jam to send the game to extra innings.
In the top of the tenth, SDSU went right to work against reliever Sam Beck (W, 1-0), the fourth Omaha pitcher. After Dagen Schramm singled, Nick Werk sacrificed pinch-runner Davis Carr to second. A wild pitch and a walk set up Noah Grawe's sacrifice fly to deep right center field, and SDSU led 6-5.
But for the third time in 2025, Omaha rallied from five runs down to win a game. One day after falling 1-0 in 10 innings to North Dakota State in G 2 of the conference tournament, the Mavericks claimed their first extra-inning win of the year. Tyler Bishop was 1-5 with his team-leading ninth homer of the season, giving him a Mavericks-best 51 RBI.
Friday's tournament schedule calls for one game, the elimination bracket matchup between Omaha and Wednesday's Game 4 loser. Saturday's schedule begins at 1:00 p.m. at Tal Anderson Field, with a final deciding game - if necessary - to follow.
