Box Score DULUTH, Minn. – In a game with the atmosphere of the impending NCHC playoffs, the No. 8 Omaha hockey team earned a 1-1 tie with No. 6 Minnesota Duluth on Friday night. The Mavericks then picked an extra point with a shootout win.
The Mavericks are now 17-10-4 overall and 11-8-2-2 in the NCHC putting them in third. The Bulldogs are now 19-12-2 overall and 11-8-2-0 in the conference, good for a tie with Denver for fourth, two points behind the Mavericks.
The game was scoreless through two periods, but UMD took the first lead of the game at 1:32 of the third. Defenseman Carson Soucy threw a shot through traffic that eluded
Ryan Massa who was screened on the play.
The lead lasted just 1:21 before the Mavericks tied the game.
Jake Guentzel broke down the right wing and sent a pass across to
James Polk who steered the puck past goalie Kasimir Kaskisuo for his second goal of the season.
The Mavericks survived a penalty kill in the final 92 seconds of overtime before reaching the shootout. Duluth native
Jake Randolph scored in the first round and after Massa stopped two UMD shooters,
Austin Ortega delivered the deciding goal in the third round.
Massa made 25 saves and earned his second shootout win. Kaskisuo turned aside 29 shots.
The final game of the series is on Saturday at 6:07 p.m.
