Huskies Stun Mavericks With Late Rally, 4-3

Box Score ST. CLOUD, Minn. – St. Cloud State scored two goals in 16 seconds late in the third period to beat the Omaha hockey team, 4-3, on Friday night at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center.

Blake Winiecki and David Morley scored at 16:56 and 17:12 respectively to pull out the win after surrendering two goals to the Mavericks in the third period to give up the lead.

Trailing 2-1 after two, the Mavericks tied the game when Tyler Vesel finished off a 3-on-2 by redirecting home a pass from Justin Parizek at 9:26.

The Mavericks took their only lead of the game on a power play just 1:30 later.  Jake Guentzel won the face off in the right circle and Austin Ortega quickly fired a shot over the glove hand of goaltender Charlie Lindgren for his 17th goal of the season, tying him for the NCHC lead.

Although they pulled Ryan Massa in the last 30 seconds of regulation, the Mavericks couldn't tie the game with the extra attacker.  Their best chance came in the last second when Ian Brady's shot from the left point hit Lindgren and was quickly cleared by the SCSU defense.

Massa stopped a game-high 35 shots while Lindgren made 23 saves.

The loss dropped the Mavericks to 17-9-3 overall and 11-7-1-1 in the NCHC.  They're now in a tie with Miami for second and trail North Dakota by three points.  UND won at Western Michigan to take over sole possession of first while Miami dropped a 3-1 decision at home to Minnesota Duluth to remain tied with UNO.  St. Cloud State improved to 14-14-1 overall and 9-9-1 in the conference.

The Mavericks got in a hole early when Jono Davis was given a five-minute checking-from-behind penalty and a game misconduct.  On the ensuing power play, Ethan Prow fired a shot under the crossbar to put the Huskies in front.

Just 1:55 later, the Huskies struck again with freshman Patrick Russell tipping in a shot by Prow on another power play to make it 2-0 after one.

The Mavericks got on the scoreboard on a power play late in the second period.  Brady walked in from the left point and whistled a shot past Lindgren who was being screened by Guentzel.  Guentzel picked up an assist on the goal which gave Brady points in seven straight games, a new team season high.

The series concludes on Saturday at 7:07 p.m.
