Box Score OMAHA, Neb. – No. 1 North Dakota got a goal 2:04 into the overtime to beat the No. 5 Omaha hockey team, 4-3, on Saturday night, turning the tables on the Mavericks who had won in OT one night earlier.
Brendan O'Donnell fired a quick shot from the left wing that tucked under
Ryan Massa for his 10th goal of the year. It ended a game in which the Mavericks fought back from a one-goal deficit three times.
The Mavericks are now 16-7-3 overall and 10-5-1-1 in the NCHC. They remain in first place, just one point ahead of North Dakota which is now 19-6-2 overall and 10-5-1-0 in conference play.
Omaha trailed 2-1 after two but tied the game when
Jake Guentzel's shot from the left wing wall ricocheted past goaltender Zane McIntyre. It was his second of the game and career-best ninth of the season.
But UND retook the lead a little more than five minutes later. Stephane Pattyn stole the puck off a UNO face-off win and got off a sharp angle shot. The puck bounced up over Massa's shoulder, and Pattyn knocked it out of the air at 9:15.
But
Brian Cooper tied the game one final time when his quick wrist shot from the right point beat McIntyre who was screened on the play. The powerplay goal came with 3:44 remaining in regulation.
North Dakota wasted no time taking the first lead of the game. Just 37 seconds into the game, Michael Parks fed Mark MacMillan for a goal during a 2-on-1. It was the quickest goal surrendered by the Mavericks this season.
UNO tied the game at 3:23.
Austin Ortega threw a pass through the neutral zone that set Guentzel free on a breakaway. He slipped a shot between the legs of McIntyre for high career-best eighth goal of the year.
UND retook the lead on a later power play. MacMillan scooped up the rebound of a shot by Luke Johnson and fired home his second of the game.
Massa made 38 saves and is now 11-4-3. McIntyre improved to 19-6-2 with 31 saves.
North Dakota won the four-game season series, 2-1-1-0.
The Mavericks have a week off before hosting Western Michigan on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 13-14.
