St. Cloud State Stops Mavericks, 4-1

Box Score ST. CLOUD, Minn. – No. 7 St. Cloud State handed the No. 6 Omaha hockey team its first loss in more than a month, beating the Mavericks 4-1 in the opener of their weekend series.

The Mavericks saw a six-game unbeaten streak end in their fifth straight loss to the Huskies dating back to last season.  They are now 11-3-1 overall and 3-3-1-0/0 in the NCHC, good for a tie with Denver for fourth.  SCSU won its fourth straight to improve to 12-3-0 overall and 6-1-0-0, keeping them in a tie with North Dakota for first.

The Huskies opened the scoring at 14:34.  Robby Jackson was the beneficiary of a turnover at the UNO blue line.  He fired a shot over the shoulder of Kirk Thompson for his fourth goal of the year.

St. Cloud State stretched its lead just 44 seconds in the middle period when Judd Peterson finished off a pretty passing play by firing home a pass from Daniel Tedesco for his team-leading 10th goal of the season.

Jake Guentzel got the Mavericks on board during a penalty kill at 2:52.  He broke in alone on goalie Charlie Lindgren and beat him with a backhander for his NCHC-leading third shorthanded goal of the season.

SCSU restored the two-goal lead before the intermission when Jimmy Murray got behind the defense and beat Thompson on a breakaway at 16:41.

Jackson added his second goal of the game at 12:56 of the third period to ice the game.

Thompson finished with 22 saves while Lindgren stopped 26 shots.

The Mavericks hadn't lost since a 6-1 setback at Western Michigan on Oct. 31.

The two teams finish the series on Saturday at 7:07 p.m.
