Box Score OMAHA, Neb. – The No. 6 Omaha hockey team got two goals each from
Justin Parizek and
Austin Ortega and 16 saves from
Kirk Thompson in a 6-0 shutout of Arizona State on Sunday afternoon at Baxter Arena.
The Mavericks improved to 14-3-1 overall and finished its non-conference schedule with a 10-0-0 record, the first perfect mark outside of their conference in school history. They also have earned more wins before January than any team in school history. UNO also improved to 8-0-0 at Baxter Arena.
The Mavericks scored first for the 15th time in 18 games when
Tyler Vesel tallied late in the first period. After getting knocked down along the end boards,
Jake Randolph got up to one knee and fed Vesel coming down the slot. He fired a shot into the top left corner for his second goal of the season.
UNO added to its lead quickly in the second period. Randolph set up Vesel for a shot from the low slot. Vesel's shot ricocheted to
Parizek who rammed it home at 1:11.
Arizona State looked to have trimmed the lead midway through the game but had a goal waved off because of a goaltender interference penalty.
Late in the period, the Mavericks took advantage of a mad scramble around the ASU net. Ortega eventually finished it, banking the puck off the post and ASU goalie Robert Levin at 16:17.
Parizek scored his second of the game with 15 seconds left in the period when Randolph stole the puck and set him up for a one-timer from the left wing wall.
In the third, Ortega picked up his second of the game when he fired home a pass from
Jake Guentzel for his 16th goal of the season, tying him for the NCAA lead.
Steven Spinner finished the scoring just 1:13 later, zipping home a drop pass from
Tanner Lane for his third goal of the year.
Thompson earned his second career shutout with a light night of work as the Mavericks allowed a season-low 16 shots on goal. Levin made 33 saves for Arizona State.
Parizek (2-1-3) and Randolph (0-3-3) finished the game with three-point efforts while Ortega (4-1-5) had five points for the weekend.
The Mavericks are off until Jan. 2 when they host Canadian university Trinity Western in an exhibition game.
