Mavericks Skate Past Arizona State, 3-1

Box Score OMAHA, Neb. – Austin Ortega had two goals and an assist to lead the No. 6 Omaha hockey team to 3-1 win over Arizona State in the first-ever meeting between the two schools.

The Mavericks earned their 13th win of the season, the most before the end of December in school history, to improve to 13-3-1 overall.  They are now 7-0-0 at Baxter Arena this season and 9-0-0 in non-conference games with a Sunday 2:07 p.m. rematch pending.  It will be their last non-conference game of the year.

Arizona State, in its first year of Division I hockey, is now 5-11-0.

The Mavericks opened the scoring for the 14th time in 17 games this year.  Luc Snuggerud put back his own rebound during a power play at 11:17 of the first period for his second goal of the season.  UNO is now 13-0-1 when scoring first.

Arizona State tied the game less than a minute later when leading scorer Jordan Masters lifted a backhander over the shoulder of UNO goalie Evan Weninger at 12:15.

UNO retook the lead on a power play late in the period.  Tyler Vesel found Ortega alone in the left face-off circle.  He zipped a wrist shot past ASU goalie Ryland Pashovitz at 18:05.

After a scoreless second period, Ortega struck again on another power play, firing home the rebound of his own shot for his team-leading 14th goal of the year.

The Mavericks were playing without junior captain Jake Guentzel (injury) and freshman Fredrik Olofsson (with Sweden's World Junior team).

For the third time in four games, the Mavericks scored three powerplay goals and are now in a tie with Miami for third in the NCHC for all games played at 20.3 percent.

Weninger stopped 19 shots and won his seventh straight game to improve to 10-1-0 this season.  Pashovitz made 41 saves in the loss.
