Austin Ortega had two goals and an assist to lead the No. 6 Omaha hockey team to 3-1 win over Arizona State in the first-ever meeting between the two schools.
The Mavericks earned their 13th win of the season, the most before the end of December in school history, to improve to 13-3-1 overall. They are now 7-0-0 at Baxter Arena this season and 9-0-0 in non-conference games with a Sunday 2:07 p.m. rematch pending. It will be their last non-conference game of the year.
Arizona State, in its first year of Division I hockey, is now 5-11-0.
The Mavericks opened the scoring for the 14th time in 17 games this year.
Luc Snuggerud put back his own rebound during a power play at 11:17 of the first period for his second goal of the season. UNO is now 13-0-1 when scoring first.
Arizona State tied the game less than a minute later when leading scorer Jordan Masters lifted a backhander over the shoulder of UNO goalie
Evan Weninger at 12:15.
UNO retook the lead on a power play late in the period.
Tyler Vesel found Ortega alone in the left face-off circle. He zipped a wrist shot past ASU goalie Ryland Pashovitz at 18:05.
After a scoreless second period, Ortega struck again on another power play, firing home the rebound of his own shot for his team-leading 14th goal of the year.

For the third time in four games, the Mavericks scored three powerplay goals and are now in a tie with Miami for third in the NCHC for all games played at 20.3 percent.
Weninger stopped 19 shots and won his seventh straight game to improve to 10-1-0 this season. Pashovitz made 41 saves in the loss.
