Guentzel Leads Mavericks To Sweep of UMD, 4-2

Box Score OMAHA, Neb. – The No. 8 Omaha hockey team scored three goals in the third period to pull away for a 4-2 win over No. 6/7 Minnesota Duluth on Saturday night.

Jake Guentzel had two goals and an assist to lead the Mavericks to a sweep of the Bulldogs in the first NCHC series at Baxter Arena.  Omaha is now 8-2-0 overall and 2-2-0-0 in the NCHC while UMD drops to 3-4-2 overall and 0-2-0-0 in conference play.

With the game tied at one in the third period, Guentzel broke the tie when he swept home the rebound of a shot by David Pope at 13:29.

Just 42 seconds later, a pass from Brian Cooper sent Tanner Lane flying up the left wing.  He curled the puck around a sliding UMD defenseman and fed Fredrik Olofsson who was crashing the net.  Olofsson tipped the pass up in the air, and the puck came down on the back of goalie Kasimir Kaskisuo, trickling into the net behind him.

Guentzel added an empty-net, shorthanded goal at 17:47 after Minnesota Duluth had pulled Kaskisuo during a late power play.

UMD's Willie Raskob scored from a sharp angle with 17 seconds remaining for the final margin.

The win improved the Mavericks to 4-0-0 in their short tenure in their new home.

UNO goaltender Evan Weninger made 35 saves to improve to 5-1-0 this season.  The Mavericks were outshot 37-21 in the game and 84-49 for the weekend with Weninger earning both wins.

The Mavericks were forced to kill three power plays in the first period, but they found offense in the third kill of the night when Justin Parizek was set free on a breakaway on a pinpoint pass from Guentzel who had dug the puck off the wall with the help of defenseman Grant Gallo.  Parizek beat Kaskisuo with a backhander at 16:38.  It was his second shorthanded goal of the season.

Guentzel's assist also extended his point-scoring streak to a team season-high eight games (5-10-15).  He leads the NCHC in scoring with 16 points and is tied with Robert Morris' Greg Gibson for the NCAA lead.

Minnesota Duluth continued to pressure in the second and finally tied the game when Dominic Toninato's shot from the left wing knuckled between Weninger and the left post.

UNO looked to have retaken the lead less than three minutes later, but a video review negated an apparent goal by Guentzel.

The Mavericks are now 9-12-2 all-time against the Bulldogs, including a mark of 4-1-2 in the last seven meetings.  They improved to 7-6-0 vs. UMD at home.

The Mavericks are off until they travel to Miami on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 20-21.
