Randolph Delivers OT Win at Miami, 3-2

Box Score OXFORD, Ohio – Jake Randolph scored 3:14 in overtime to give the No. 6 Omaha hockey team a 3-2 win over Miami on Saturday night at Steve Cady Arena.

The Mavericks earned their first NCHC road win and finished the weekend with four points after a 3-3 tie on Friday.  UNO is now 9-2-1 overall and 3-2-1-0 in the conference while Miami, winless in four, dropped to 5-7-1 overall and 2-5-1-1 in the NCHC.

On the winning goal, Tyler Vesel sprinted down the right wing and slid the puck across the crease where Randolph was crashing the net.  He was able to redirect the puck in off the post from a sharp angle for his career-best seventh goal of the season.

The Mavericks got to that point in overtime thanks to freshman goaltender Evan Weninger who made several tough stops in the first shift of OT as Miami pressed early for the winner.

Weninger improved to 6-1-0, making 30 saves.

The game was a back-and-fourth affair in which the Mavericks took a 2-0 lead only to see Miami tie it.

Omaha scored first for the 10th time in 12 games when David Pope grabbed the rebound of a shot by Austin Ortega and fired it past goalie Ryan McKay at 8:29 of the opening period.  It was his first goal of the year.

The Mavericks got a power play early in the second period, and Brian Cooper made it pay, firing home a shot from the low slot for his second goal of the season.

But the RedHawks battled back late in the period.  Anthony Louis fired a wicked backhander under the crossbar at 16:18, and Kiefer Sherwood finished off a 2-on-1 three minutes later to knot the game.

The Mavericks were 1-for-7 on the power play against a Miami penalty kill that came into the game leading the NCAA.  They also held the RedHawks without a powerplay goal on four chances after allowing two powerplay goals in Friday's game.

The Mavericks return home to host Ohio State on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 27-28.
