Box Score OXFORD, Ohio – Austin Ortega scored his NCHC-leading ninth goal of the year to help the No. 6 Omaha hockey team to a 3-3 tie at Miami on Friday night at Steve Cady Arena.

Miami got a goal in the ensuing 3-on-3 overtime instituted this year by the NCHC to earn an extra standings point.  The Mavericks are now 8-2-1 overall and 2-2-1-0 in the conference while the RedHawks are now 5-6-2 overall and 2-4-1-1.

Ortega's game-tying goal came halfway through the third period.  He fired a sharp-angle shot to the far top corner past goalie Ryan McKay.

After a scoreless 5-on-5 overtime, Belpedio got loose in the UNO end and converted the rebound of his own shot just 49 seconds into the frame.

Kirk Thompson made 21 saves in the loss while McKay turned aside 22.

The Mavericks broke open a scoreless game just 47 seconds into the second period when Fredrik Olofsson fired home the rebound of a shot by Brian Cooper for his fifth goal of the year.

Miami tied the game when Anthony Louis got loose and rattled in a shot off Thompson at 3:22.

UNO retook the lead at 5:28 when Tyler Vesel scored his first goal of the season.  With the Mavericks shorthanded, he broke down the right wing and cut to the net, roofing a backhander over McKay's glove hand.  It was UNO's NCAA-leading fifth shorthanded goal of the season.

Miami answered quickly as its power play continued.  Matthew Caito scored through a screen at 5:55.

The RedHawks then got their first lead during another power play when outstanding freshman Jack Roslovic fired a shot under the crossbar from a tough angle at 17:25.

The two teams finish the series on Saturday at 6:05 p.m. CT.
