Box Score BURLINGTON, Vt. – Fredrik Olofsson and Austin Ortega each scored a pair of goals and the No. 3/4 Omaha hockey team improved to 3-0-0 with a 4-3 win over No. 20 Vermont on Friday.
The first-ever meeting between the two schools was not without its white-knuckle moments for the Mavericks who built a 4-1 lead only to see the Catamounts battle back. The undefeated start through three games is UNO's best since the 2010-11 season.
Olofsson put the Mavericks in the lead with a milestone goal. He punched home the rebound of a shot by Brian Cooper for his first collegiate goal just 7:17 into the first period.
Olofsson showed up on the scoresheet again just 2:03 later. With the Mavericks on the power play, Tyler Vesel saucered a pass through traffic to Olofsson at the right post. He one-timed the puck past goalie Mike Santaguida for the second two-goal game from a Maverick in as many games.
Vermont broke through at the nine minute mark of the second period when Jarrid Privatera converted off a scramble in front of Kirk Thompson.
The Mavericks responded quickly. Ortega fired home a centering pass from Olofsson just 1:31 after Vermont had scored to make it 3-1. Then just 2:08 later, Ortega showed the scorer's touch again, diving to redirect a centering pass from Jake Guentzel just under the crossbar.
But Vermont narrowed the lead to two again when Tom Forgione scored a shorthanded goal at 16:18.
In the third, the Catamounts drew to within one when Anthony Petruzzelli fired a shot just under the crossbar at 5:04.
The Mavericks held on for the balance of the game behind the goaltending of Thompson who improved to 2-0-0 this season with 26 saves.
Olofsson finished the night with four points, assisting on UNO's other goals. Guentzel had three assists.
The two teams finish the series on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. ET at Gutterson Fieldhouse.
